Oliver Paipoonge Heritage Park
The Oliver Paipoonge Heritage Park features 4 attractions in one location! The fascinating Duke Hunt Museum is housed inside the historic Slate River Hall, which was built in 1904. Browse at your own speed and view the many aspects of history from our municipality including articles from our local brickyard, railroad pictures and artifacts, household furnishings, a splendid military section and more. At the east end of the property, you will find a 50’ X 110’ building, aptly named Russ’s Garage, which houses the Russ Wanzuk Collection of vintage cars, race cars, kids pedal cars, toys and numerous memorabilia from auto and racing events. Climb on board the Brill Buses and visualize riding in downtown Fort William or Port Arthur in the 1950’s! Embraced by these spectacular facilities is The Village, which consists of a Pioneer Home, Carpenter Shop, Newsprint Shop, Cobbler Shop, Blacksmith Shop, the Village Square, Fred Goodfellow’s General Store, a replica of the Upsula Train Station (including an early caboose), a Church, a one room School and a Teacherage. All village buildings are furnished and stocked with merchandise that you would expect to see in the early years prior to 1949.
We welcome you to visit and Take a Walk Through the Past! Watch for special family events throughout the season! Or make a day of it and bring your picnic lunch!
Oliver Paipoonge Heritage Park is located on Highway 61, just 15 km from the Thunder Bay Airport. Head south on Highway 61 towards the US border and turn right on Gillespie Road.
